On this beautiful sunny morning I’m on the train going back North to Glasgow planning my repertoire for events coming up this Spring and Summer. I’ve been working for the past couple of weeks to get some money together for a planned event in Italy and resting my voice after that awful throat cold I had. Now I need to work on the songs for my performances and my Spring term at RCS.
Tomorrow, 21st April, I’m performing with Les Sirenes at St Andrew’s Kirk Helensburgh.
I need to finalise my pieces for the International Music Eisteddfod in Llangollen in July, this is my first time at this competition, I’m really looking forward to it, I love North Wales. I believe I have to get there early because parking gets difficult because its such a popular event.
I also have some exciting events coming up this July in Nantwich, Cheshire; August in Lytham St Anne’s; and at the end of August in Rochdale see my website for more information in the next few weeks. Russell Lomas will be accompanying me on Piano and Elliot Gresty will be performing some solo pieces on the clarinet..
Then I have fabulous events coming up with Tideswell Male Voice Choir this year, the first one is 27th July 2013 at Tideswell Parish Church. Then Sunday 11th August 2013 at Gawsworth Hall, a Les Miserable Experience with the choir and fellow up-and-coming artists. Hi Peabea, I am glad that you could stop by and visit for a while. I have always enjoyed crafting but nowadays it is limited to paper crafting due to my studies. I do enjoy making cards for my family and friends as I find it very relaxing 🙂

Hi Charlotte – thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m very interested in the fact that you will be singing in Llangollen this summer. Way back in 1970 I sang with a choir from Canada in the Festival. It was an amazing experience, and one I will never forget. I look forward to hearing more.
It’s not long now before I go to Llangollen for my first entry in this competition, in 1970 my Dad might have been in the audience watching 😉 he grew up in North Wales and this competition was the highlight of the summer and the children used to visit with trips organised by the local chapel.

Where was he from? We billeted in Hope, where our director had taught. Also sang in a Welsh festival on Holy Island and competed against a choir directed by his mother. It was an incredible summer.
My Father lived a small village on the North Wales coast near Caernarvon. I am so glad that you enjoyed your time there.

My niece, Cleo Goodman, studies chemstry at Glasgow. Perhaps you know her?
I’m sorry I’ve not bumped into Cleo but it’s an amazing small world in matters like this and who knows if our paths will cross in the future. Glasgow University is a fabulous institution, my younger brother is thinking about going there next year.

Hi John, the only opera that could find sibling rivalry as a central theme is “Les enfants terribles” by Philip Glass ( Link ) I don’t know very much about other than I read using the link. if I find any others I will post a reply for you.

You seem to be a full lyric soprano, whereas I have remained in the soubrette-like, light-lyric category. I am at least 20 years older than you, and I am still singing the arias of Despina or Susanna. This won’t change, so I am embracing the youthfulness.
I am from Rochester, New York, the hometown of Renee Fleming, who was recently given an award by President Obama. If you haven’t already, I would recommend that you read her autobiography.

I sang the Bach-Gounod version for a competition but I find it is not what people are expecting when they read Ave Maria in the programme. I will remember your advice not to be too much Brunnhilde 🙂 Renee Fleming is one of my favourite singers I have read about her and would love to see her live one day. My voice has changed so much this last year everyone keeps saying it will be very interesting to see where it is in three years time.

Hi Charlotte, with your refined voice, even if you were “too much Brunnhilde” it would still sound wonderful. I was referring to the less-trained divas with a vibrato that you can drive a truck through (an expression I learned from church choir members).
Renee Fleming’s book is entitled “The Inner Voice: The Making of a Singer.” Once I read it, I stopped worrying about what everyone else thought because I am starting late. I grew up about 10 miles from Fleming. She is seven years older than I am, so I never actually moved in the same circles as she did. When I was a child, she was already a teen. Did you know she was born on Valentine’s Day 1959? And her renditions of both “Ave Marias” are very prayerful indeed!
To give you an idea, I was born in 1966 and am the same age and voice type as Natalie Dessay. I have been working on developing the low and mid-range.
I am also eager to see what your voice will be like. People tell me they began with Marguerite’s “Jewel Song” or Adele’s “Laughing Song,” but then their voices evolved. The same happened to Diana Damrau, who sang these light lyric arias with a BIG sound to begin with.

My Grandma crocheted my Christening Robe and Shawl, I was a winter baby and was Christened at 3 months old, I must post a photograph of it she did a beautiful job. My brother wore it with a blue ribbon in place of the baby pink one I had and my Mum has put it up safe 🙂

Hi Lauren, I’m from Mid-Cheshire in England about 30 minutes drive to Chester, 45 minutes to Manchester and 50 minutes to Liverpool. I’ve been in Glasgow for a year and love the City, I’d never been before my first audition and didn’t know what to expect. The train journey home is about 3 hours.
