We have just found out that this year as part of the Glasgow music festival “Celtic Connections” students from the RCS will be performing works by the Indian composer and song writer A R Rahman alongside the BBCSSO plus students from the Chennai Conservatory in India and Indian instrumentalists. The most exciting part is that Mr Rahman will be performing with us.
The festival aims to promote both Celtic music and styles and genres from around the world. It is similar to the International Eisteddfod held in Llangollen, Wales each Summer.
Both festivals encourage and promote music aiming to improve interaction between different Countries and cultures through their music.
“Glasgow’s annual folk, roots and world music festival, Celtic Connections, celebrates Celtic music and its connections to cultures across the globe. Between 16th January – 2nd February 2014, 2,100 musicians from around the world will descend on Glasgow and bring the city to life for 18 days of concerts, ceilidhs, talks, art exhibitions, workshops, and free events.”
A R Rahman is a composer and song writer from India whose credits make him one of the world’s best selling recording artists. His website makes interesting reading and those who live in the UK may know him best for his soundtrack for the film “Slumdog Millionaire” which I used to love dancing to in the Bollywood style when I was at school.
The concert is due to take place at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on the 30th January 2014. This should be an excellent concert and it is a good opportunity for everyone to extend their knowledge of this composer and his music.
I am so excited to be involved and we should be getting the scores tomorrow 🙂

How exciting!
I know it is very exciting, really looking forward to the rehearsals, we’ve been allocated Andrew Nunn as our conductor and to prepare us for this, he conducts Les Sirenes Female Choir that I’m a member of, he has been an excellent mentor and helped me so much this past year as Les Sirenes is the first formal choir that I have been a member of.

Interesting to hear that you’re involved in Celtic Connections, as one of the featured performers will be my favourite singer, Shawn Colvin, who lives in Austin,Texas. Unfortunately, time and money prevent me from getting to Glasgow to see her, and it’s now a double shame as it would have been a chance to hear you for a second time. Though apparently Shawn’s appearing the night after you, on the 31st, and again on February 2nd. Can’t make any of the dates though.
Oh Michael that’s a shame. I love folk music so I’ll have to put Shawn on my listening list for next month when I’ve got my singing exam and this performance completed. There’s lots happening in Glasgow this year 🙂
