My First Live Radio Interview – I’m So Excited

UPDATED 27th April 21:45 pm

Charlotte

I was so excited when a radio presenter from BBC Radio Guernsey contacted me on Twitter and asked if I would be willing to take part in a radio interview on his Sunday morning show. Without a moments hesitation I Tweeted him back to willingly accept 🙂

RadioGuernsey

This was something new for me as it is normally me trying to wrangle an interview with someone I meet and find interesting.

Andrew Hislop – BBC Radio Guernsey

He is a lovely man who puts you at ease immediately so I am really looking forward to talking with him tomorrow morning, Sunday 27th April on his show which is broadcast between 07:00 am and 09:00 am on 93.2 FM for those of you able to tune in.  I believe that my interview is to be on around 08:00 am which will give me a little bit of a lie-in but you know me I will probably be up, dressed and ready to go from about 07:00 am.

UPDATE

I was up bright and early, the sun was up with me which added to my general excitement.  I wanted to be ready for my call.  At about 08:00am Jonathan from BBC Radio Guernsey telephoned me and chatted to get me settled and calm ready for going live on air, I think that he could sense that I was “buzzing” from the anticipation.

Then at 08:11 Andy introduced me and we were off………

Andy made me feel very relaxed and the interview flew by, after it was all over and he had played a couple of my songs I phoned my parents to make sure that I had not made any bloomers, but they said all was well with the exception of one tiny little made up word ….. ( you can find it yourself as I am not admitting to anything 🙂   )

I have received so many lovely comments from my friends here, by text and on my Facebook, Google+ and Twitter pages and can not thank you all enough for the tremendous support that you give me it is truly humbling.

If you want to listen to the interview it is available HERE on BBC iPlayer for seven days from today ( 27th April 2014 ). The interview starts at about 01:10 ( that 1 hour 10 minutes ) into the programme.

Ariane, one of my early blog friends created a picture for me after listening to my interview and I have reproduced here as it was so lovely.

  1. Take a deep breath. Relax. And above all be yourself and it will be so good it will be over before you realise.

Are you in studio or is this down-the-line linkup stuff?

    1. Great advice, b r e a t h, I must remember to talk slowly when I get excited I get carried away. Link up, although a trip to Guernsey sounds good 😛

  2. All thumbs up! Congratulations Charlotte , I understand how excited you are. But this is a big step forward for your career & I am sure you deserve the best .xx

    1. Hi Gerardo I hope you can catch a replay too because I recorded a couple of my favourite songs in a studio with George Todica who accompanied me at the Ferrier competition and I’d like you to hear them.

  3. Leaving work in the states, I also listen to BBC morning radio on the way home to catch up with what is going on in the world. I will try to plug in since I should be home around the time you are on.

      1. I was ambushed the other day at my volunteer job to do an interview and without time to rehearse I felt like a rambling goof. So I can relate to you having to be on your toes with the questions. I must say you were very composed and handled yourself very well.

Your voice sounded great too! All in all, it was a thoughtful interview!

        Have a good weekend!

    1. Thanks Linda, about two minutes before I went live I thought “Why did I tell everyone I was doing this”, less pressure if no one I knew was listening 🙂 It was fun though.

      1. Thanks a lot Gaurab and for the retweet I appreciate your friendship and encouragement 🙂 What a good idea to do a featured posts blog I can’t believe I missed those Indian Culture posts.

    1. Thanks for the vote of confidence Eric; it was a great learning experience, I put a several big virtual post it notes up on my computer screen saying Go Girl, Slow Down, 20-30 seconds and ENJOY. To remind myself not lose confidence, speak carefully and don’t rush my answers, and don’t go on boring everyone with overly long answers 🙂

    1. I’ve put the link up now but I think it’s only open for seven days before they take it down. Let me know what you think I value your opinion if it’s bad e-mail me 🙂 lol

      1. Very good interview! It goes from about 1.10.30 to 1.24.00 – in case there are other idiots like myself who were searching one minute ten seconds into the broadcast!
I’m pretty sure you’ll be invited back.

    1. It was awesome for me, I jumped right in and said yes immediately; then my Mum said “what’s he going to ask you about?”, “how long is the show?” “is it recorded or is it live?” and on.. and then I thought: I best ask before I just go on live lol.

  4. Very cool! I’m afraid that your interview will be on here at about 2:00 a.m., so it’s very doubtful that I’ll be up to hear it. But I’ll definitely listen to the rebroadcast! Another step to international stardom!

    1. I love your optimism Dan; it was a very good experience though. My flatmate suggested I plug my computer into the internet connection rather than relying on WiFi which was a good tip, I think he was worried I’d be running around early Sunday morning waking him up if the connection didn’t work ha ha ha. I’ve put a link in to the BBC recording my section starts at 1:11 or 08:11am.

    1. Take a listen Clare and let me know what you think, I thought it was OK for a first attempt. I’m hoping it’s a bit like performing the first time could be better but as time passes it gets more natural.

      1. I have just listened to the interview on i-player. Congratulations! Your lovely warm personality shone through and you did extremely well for a first interview! I think only a parent or tutor would notice any fluffs and grammatical errors, the rest of us were just enjoying listening to you. Your parents must be so proud of you. I am sure you’re right about experience – the more you do the more relaxed and better you get. It is another performance of sorts – deep controlled breathing and speaking slower than you think is necessary!
        Best wishes to you
        Clare

    1. Gill you are always so supportive, I couldn’t believe it when Mum said you were up at 7am and listening to the full show, then you got Terry up too he he. You’ve always been a ‘superfan’ lol.

    1. I’m hoping to do some more studio recording in the holiday and get a cd/download out of my pieces up to the end of my second year. Dad got your tickets to the Gawsworth Hall in August so save the date 10th August.

      All the best

    1. Thanks so much Cecilia that’s really kind of you, so many people say “Oh you sound nothing like you sing!” It’s given me a marker to work on now.

I have just listened to your recording on your blog and I too have “High Hopes” for the the success of your campaign. Do you have Twitter?

      1. Really? I’ve always wondered what people mean exactly when they say that. Seems such a weird thing to say. xD

Aww! Thank you! Yes, we’re hoping for it but we’ll need loads of help. No, I don’t but the band has one: https://twitter.com/OfficialLapis
I’ve thought of getting one for myself though, might come in handy… not sure exactly how to use it effectively though.

        All the best,
        Cecilia

  5. Another new experience? Managed to listen in to your interview on the link you gave us. Sounds like everything went very well. Congratulations, Charlotte. 😉 Andy seems to be a very nice person. So that was very fortunate for you. Well done. 😉

    1. Thanks Iris, yes Andy was very helpful and gave me an idea of the questions he’d ask beforehand when I asked which helped although there were a couple I didn’t expect. It was just a very fortunate occurrence out of the blue. Thanks for your lovely message.

  6. remember the old show-biz saying: be nice to everyone you meet on the way up, for you meet them again on the way down 🙂 Does one say “break a leg” for interviews ?

    1. Great advice Bill, I agree wholeheartedly, being nasty or mean just takes up so much wasted energy. We should come up with a new saying. In opera they say toi toi toi but that seems a bit over dramatic even for me lol.

  7. Warm and loving… described you as well as your singing (I hope that doesn’t sound creepy to say, I don’t mean it in a stalker-y way LOL)

    1. It certainly was a key moment for me a first marker, my Mum always says you’ve got to learn to roll over before you can walk. It would be lovely to increase the number of people following my learning journey. I had a rejection for a part I went for in the mail the other day so this cheered me up no end.

    1. Thank you, your rustic wedding ideas were just lovely. They’d make good stage set pieces too, you could branch out 🙂 I thought of you when I saw some sweetie trees the other day, like those green round orbs in your Easter Dinner picture but made with sweeties in little silver plant pots on a high central stick.

    1. It was a lovely gesture by Andy to invite me on his show after listening to some of my recordings on my blog. I had a great time and enjoyed every second.

I don’t know about famous but it is definitely a first for me 🙂

  8. Congratulations on this exciting new experience! I loved listening to these two recordings of Song to the Moon. It is a beautiful piece of music, and your connection to it and expressiveness makes it even more so!

    1. Thanks Joyce I really appreciate your kind words, I just love the song, I will work on it every year simply because it’s one of my favourites, do you have a special song you love to sing? Best wishes

  9. Just wonderful, Charlotte, but not surprising! And if you made up a word in your interview, I didn’t catch it! The music, as always, is beautiful. All the best to you! 🙂

    1. Thanks Linda my parents were really proud of me, they just like to ground me again 😀 it’s strange to listen to yourself talking formally and I will take a lot away from the morning.

  10. Great Interview. You are very grounded and your passion for your art comes through. Let us know if you ever sing here in the US.

  11. Just loved to listen , I would like to know more about opera. If you dont mind can you send me details of this particular song ?

    1. Thanks Swathi, look at November 2013 in the archive under Rusalka Sing to the Moon and there pictures and videos there too, hope that helps.
