I Can See Your Voice

In July 2020, during the first lockdown, I saw a job listing on Audition Oracle for a chance to participate in a new musical-themed TV gameshow. I am so glad that I took the opportunity to send in my application for consideration, as last night I took part in BBC One’s new Saturday night game show called I Can See Your Voice (ICSYV) under the karate-inspired pseudonym One Hit Wonder. I still feel wired with excitement this morning and I barely slept a wink, as being a part of the show was so much fun, and I cannot wait to share the experience with you today.

FILMING THE EPISODE

The production team, (Thames TV, Fremantle, and BBC), really took care of the participating artists. A massive shout out to Lucy Rutter and Mike Cloherty for making my first experience of working on a TV show run like clockwork. The team thought of everything and worked so hard to make the singers feel like an integral part of the production.

The night before filming I was put up in a nearby hotel, which really helped me to stay calm and feel well prepared. Before leaving for the TV Studio, I had a costume fitting at the hotel and like all the singers I then had a rehearsal of my part for the celebrity duet with vocal coach, Ulrika Bergelind and choreographer Claudimar Neto, so each singer was prepared should we make it through to the final round.

We then left for the studio, where I was provided with a private dressing room. Very Swanky! I was then called to set for my walk-through. During this rehearsal, I was amazed at how awesome the set looked, I felt like I had been transported to a musical spaceship from Star Trek. There were so many neon lights, podiums, cameras, an elevated viewing dock, and much more. Luckily my Mum had advised me that morning, to just soak up every drop of excitement from the experience and that kept me from getting too overwhelmed or nervous – Thanks, Mum!

I was then greeted by Annabel Williams, head vocal coach for Britain’s Got Talent, and I rehearsed my entrances and exits, my routines for “Wuthering Heights” (Lip Sync Song), “Think of Me” (Stage of Truth Song), and “Bang! Bang!” (Celebrity Duet with Fleur East). Even the run-through was a blast, I could not wait till we would begin filming.

I was then sent to Jo Jenkins, who managed my hair and make-up. She made me feel fierce yet feminine, a perfect kick-ass combination that could throw the contestants off the scent of my operatic training. The secrecy surrounding the gameshow was so high, that I was not able to formally meet or speak with any of the other mystery singers. I had no idea who else could sing. Which made the show just as exciting for me as I hope it was for the viewers at home.

Then the call for filming began! I can’t remember what time we started, but the filming took around three hours in total from which 50 minutes would be used in the final edit. Firstly, all the mystery singers were called to the stage to film our poses on the podiums. Then presenter Paddy McGuinness arrived on set and we filmed his podium-splitting entrance. I had to really concentrate on staying still whilst the podiums moved sideways to create the walkthrough. My Pilates’ training kicking in! ( thank you so much, Chiara ) Then the celebrity investigators Jimmy Carr, Alison Hammond, and Amanda Holden arrived on set with celebrity guest judge Fleur East. The contestants Anton and Duban came to the stage and it was showtime!

To avoid spoilers, I will not discuss what happened next, but I will say that the mystery singers had to stand on the podiums, totally still, for a REALLY long time, whilst each Judge passed their comments, witty remarks, and banter. I was so thankful that I was in plimsoles! The stage managers were brilliant at telling us when we were off camera so we could have some water and move/sit down. I was told to stay in character, and not to smile, which if you know me well, was quite the challenge. But after watching the episode back, the neutral demeanor worked really well! When it was my time to sing, I wasn’t able to do my normal quick vocal warm-up in case the panel and players could hear, as it would ruin the surprise, just enough time for a quick sip of water, then I was on!

After Watching The Show Back

I had the most amazing experience and I have enjoyed watching the four episodes aired so far. It is fun to guess and I have been tricked a few times, which has made the game all the more fun. If you fancy a little bit of light relief you can catch my episode on the BBC i-Player if you live in the UK.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000vt2b/i-can-see-your-voice-series-1-episode-4

The contestants in my episode were Anton & Duban they were two lovely guys, and I had my fingers crossed for them throughout the show.

The singers were:

Acrobat – Jordan Wilcox

Child Star – Hariette Sleight

Sweet Harmony – Zalika Henry

One Hit Wonder – Charlotte Hoather

Radio Host – Kalex

Pop Princess – Denise Scott

When I was preparing for the show I recorded my versions of  Wuthering Heights and Think of Me for my Dad’s birthday as we could not visit him due to Covid restrictions, they are favourites of both my Mum and Dad.  As I can’t share the BBC version from the show due to the copyright I have included these recordings for those of you who live outside the UK and can’t watch the episode.

  1. Congratulations on your performance, I wish I could view the BBC TV channels here in the States. 😊🇬🇧❤️

    1. Thank you. I’ve put on a couple of videos I recorded on my iPhone with a green screen at home for my Dads 60th birthday last December, just a bit of fun, you don’t get the top rate sound recording like on the BBC show but I thought you’d enjoy them.

  2. What a wonderful thing to do, Charlotte. Unfortunately, the link to episode four will not play in the USA. I love the name “One Hit Wonder” and you are a Karate Girl after all.

    1. Thank you Timothy. I’ve put on a couple of videos I recorded on my iPhone with a green screen at home for my Dads 60th birthday last December, just a bit of fun, you don’t get the top rate sound recording like on the BBC show but I thought you might enjoy them.

Paddy the host and Jimmy Carr were really funny and I had to work hard not to laugh out loud, especially when in one of the outtakes Jimmy told Paddy to watch what he said about me or I could take him down, and Paddy was like ‘if she’s hard enough’ and I gave him my look and he backed off and said “Covid, remember we’re in covid keep your distance 😂’.

      1. That sounds like it was so much fun. I can imagine how hard it would be not to laugh. Thank you so much for adding those clips. I love them. I especially like you in “Wuthering Heights”. You make woderful expressions. I certainly wouldn’t mess with you.

      2. Haha, its a bit up too close to the camera it’s a small room and I forget I’m not on stage but Dad loved it. The camera guy who filmed my karate section said my whole demeanour changed when I went into karate mode from smiley 😃 to don’t mess with me fierce. I wish you could see the it. They have used my karate kick in a couple of the previous episodes previews and I was keeping my fingers crossed that no-one recognised me and asked me about it because I would have had to say ‘no it wasn’t me, she does look like me though’.

      3. The camera was not too close at all. I’m with your dad on loving it. That’s great how you can change your expressions. You are a very good actriss. It will be the infamous karate kick forever replayed in the previews and prologs to the shows. That would be a real kicker if you get royalties for every time your kick is flicked on the screen.

      4. I watched it. You were great. I take it the two contestants would have lost if the other woman couldn’t sing? Since I don’t have a TV, I’m not up on these shows. I tried to watch it through my browser, but I discovered there is a law in the UK that you have to have a TV license to watch TV through your browser. It’s only £159/year. Wow!

I’m really happy I got to see the show. You put on a really stern face until they asked you to speak and they all smiles with a sweet voice. The reactions from the stars and the two contestants when you sang the second song were priceless. It is so cool that you got to participate in the show and get such wonderful exposure. You are blessed and you blessed the air waves with your beautiful voice and presence.

      5. Thanks Timothy, the BBC is a fantastic resource in the UK it supports several tv stations, radio stations including a classical station and a free news website and a world service. I’m surprised they don’t sell the channel to subscription in other English speaking countries there is a lot of original content and dramas.

      1. Thanks. I learned a bit about TV laws in the UK. Very interesting.

    1. Thank you John, I’ve put on a couple of videos I recorded on green screen at home for my Dads 60th birthday last December, just a bit of fun, you don’t get the top rate sound recording like on the BBC show but I thought you’d enjoy them.

  3. Of both you shared (lovely presentations both) Think or Me brought a lump tp my throat. I closed my eyes and allowed you and George to carry me through a journey of emotion. So very happy to share in your adventures. This BBC production is just the beginning of new and exciting for you. Carry on, dear Charlotte! <3

    1. Thank you Annette, I’ve been dying to tell you all about the show but I was held to total secrecy until after my episode aired so as not to spoil the show.

The first musical theatre show I saw on the West End was Phantom of the Opera, my Dad loves the show, Kate Bush is a real favourite of my Mums and I grew up listening to all her cds in the car on journeys.

  4. As you know, it won’t play here, but I am certain you did a fantastic job!! How did you ever keep it a secret? George – why didn’t you sneak a hint out to us, eh?
I am so happy for you !!

    1. I’m so sad you can’t see it GP, I’ve had lots of lovely feedback. I’ve put on a couple of You tube videos of George and I performing it at home with a green screen, we recorded it on my iPhone for my Dads Musical Birthday card last December so it’s not got the BBC sound quality but it gives you an idea. I was bursting but we were honour bound not to pre-announce we were in the show.
      I’m happy you’re happy.

      2. You did, I’m grateful to have you in my life 🥰.

    1. It was on BBC1 yesterday evening but it is on BBC I-Player catch-up if you can get that, I hope so because it was a good fun episode.

      1. Arghh. I missed it then 🙁 Unfortunately, I do not have a fake IPS address and so, alas, can’t see it. Hopefully, it will be repeated or find its way to YouTube!! 😉

    1. I knew you’d love it Gill. My Nan and Grandad loved it too. I was dying to tell you all about it so I’m glad you saw it yesterday. Jimmy Carr was the only judge who kept saying she’s the real deal all the way through. When they were looking at how people held the microphone 🎤 I thought oh no! I never hold a microphone I’m going to hold it wrong. Still buzzing.

    1. Thank you Patricia, it was a ray of light in lockdown to do this filming. I just loved the whole experience. The only thing we missed out on was meeting each other because of covid we were all kept very distant from each other. It was the first time I sang live with the music piped into an ear piece because I normally sing with live musicians, the sound engineer was fabulous and reassuring. I got to walk through smoke 💨 to the stage of truth. It was a real bucket list moment.

  6. Absolutely brilliant, Charlotte! I couldn’t watch on the BBC i-Player, as I’m in the U.S., but it’s on YouTube. I just searched for the title of the show and was able to watch there. What a fun TV show! And you were wonderful!

    1. Oh, I didn’t know they were putting it on YouTube I’ll have to take a look. On last weeks show there were only two good singers and the two guessers lost the money to a trainee doctor who was a bad singer but she got the money to help her whilst training.

  7. I’ve been enjoying I Can See Your Voice since the beginning but this was far the best episode. That was thanks to you and your amazing voice and performance, it shocked me as my guesses are terrible (I was fooled into thinking you were bad). I was then stunned into silence, amazement and a happy tear as you performed Think Of Me. Keep doing what you’re doing, you are amazing and have an unreal talent for singing and performing. Best Wishes

    1. Aww thank you Kevin, I’ve been enjoying watching the series too. A big thank you for searching me out and finding my blog to make my morning. 😀. Please check back from time to time to see what I’m up to hopefully when we start to re-open. By the way filming was just as exciting for the singers too as we were all kept separate and didn’t know who was a good singer or a bad singer and when they picked me I thought ‘Oh No’ because I wasn’t sure if Sweet Harmony was a singer or not and the trainee doctor last week was a bad singer, although Zalika Henry (sweet harmony) did look super cool, I wanted them to win the money.

  8. Not being in the UK, I can’t see the show, but I did see the clip of you on their site. It so funny seeing people disappointed that you have a gorgeous voice 😂 But the clip did sound great! I also liked the videos you posted. I don’t know what I was thinking, but the name “Wuthering Heights” didn’t ring any bells until you started singing and then, hey, it’s Kate Bush! Anyway, congratulations for getting onto the show! What an experience. Oh, I see from other comments that the show is on Youtube – I’ll have find it.

    1. It made me smile big 😃 when I got the job. At first I thought I’d been cut at the final stage but it all turned out well and I had the most fabulous experience.
We love Kate Bush thanks to Mum when I was growing up constantly playing her music and Madonna, Prince and the Backstreet Boys (I know!), she likes Eminem too but was always worried there was too much swearing for us when we were around (heard worse on the playground 😂).

      1. I did find a video on Youtube, so was able to watch 🙂 I would love to hear the entire Wuthering Heights! Kate Bush wasn’t as big here in the US as in the UK and most people say, “who?” when I mention her. Congratulations again for getting onto the show!

      2. There is a full video of me singing Wuthering Heights recorded at home though on the blog post, I made a musical birthday card for my Dads 60th birthday and he cut it and made it into an individual recording for us.

      3. No offense to George, but I wanted to hear the studio version 😉 I do like both of the videos you posted.

      4. A few years ago I mentioned that Renée Fleming rock album was, in my opinion, a little less successful than I would like. Hearing what you did here and in the balcony concerts, I don’t think you have to worry – you do a great transition to more pop and Broadway styles, as well as the rock of Ms. Bush. Oh, and I had to smile at your ending of “Think of Me” on the show. If anyone didn’t know you were in the “good” category before those vocal fireworks, they found out 😉

      5. My Mum has been trying to get me to learn her favourite Kate Bush songs for years. I spent ten years doing musical theatre style from 6 to 16 years of age and a further 2 years at college doing Musical Theatre, along with Maths, Music, Drama and Dance before going to the conservatoire to concentrate on classical voice. The biggest difference is in music theatre you’re miked up and can sing the low notes through the mike more easily whereas with opera you’ve got no microphone and have to get a much bigger sound through the whole range.
I said to the sound guy I don’t need the mike (they used to turn it off in school productions) and he said ‘I know you don’t need it but trust me I need it to pick up every note for the broadcast’ so I completely put my trust in him with the earpiece and mike both things I don’t normally use. Just a great experience.
Thanks Trent. All my best wishes, Charlotte

  9. Charlotte, Congratulations that was absolutely amazing.
We are so very proud of you, I can’t believe you kept it a secret for so long..
The judges faces when you started singing were a picture.
Still trying to work out how to save and share, I, will do it eventually, lol.xxxx

    1. Thank you both, I am so happy you enjoyed it.
Honestly I don’t know how I kept it in I wanted to tell everyone to watch it but thought you could all see it on catch up if you missed it.
The judges were very funny throughout the recording, I don’t know how I kept a straight face and to not smile was a torture 😂 .

  13. What a lot of fun! And I hope it brings you more exposure too. Hopefully the “right” people were watching, talent-spotting. I was able to get it up on you-tube as some others here suggested, and Bill and I watched it right through on the television, just as if we were in a British loungeroom. Your performance was fabulous, and I saw tears in the eyes of the cast.
At one time in the late 70s/early 80s I worked for an accountant in Kensington High Street who specialised in musicians. Kate Bush was one of the clients and I met her briefly. Another one I remember more was Ray O’Sullivan (aka Gilbert).

    1. I’m so happy that you got to see it Gwen, great fun.
You had such a brilliant time on your travels and work in the UK Gwen what brilliant memories. When I studied at the RCM Kensington High Street was my stomping ground.

  14. OMG. How amazing. Charlotte you absolutely rocked that show. I watched your parts a couple of times and I loved your Wuthering Heights. As for being a 2nd Dan – you have my total respect Sensei. I got to 1st Kyu in Shotokan Karate before I was taken seriously ill and had to give it up. (I may take it up again when I can). I understand the discipline you have for the art and how it can help you focus for your Music. You are so talented and gifted in both art forms. Congratulations on the show you deserved it. Hopefully the exposure you had from the show could help you in the future.
I wish you every success, and I’m proud to have you as follower of my little ol’ blog.
    You’re amazing. Well done you.

    1. Thanks Mart, I love your blog, good thing you don’t live near me I’d be getting you to zoot up my C1 I’m so hopeless with it I had to call the AA out to a flat battery!
So happy you enjoyed the show, standing there with that stern face was so difficult, I saw the Princess get on her podium and I thought Awww, Princess (Denise) is so gorgeous! I want to book her for my next birthday party never mind her singing for children, we didn’t meet each other but she reached out to me after the show and the acrobat Jordan and the contestants did, that’s the problem with covid we missed an after show meet up.
Sorry to read you had to quit the karate, Dad restarted Karate with us and didn’t stop until Tom left for University. I really enjoyed getting back in shape for the show, Sensei Kathryn was a love letting me join back in with the online lessons so that was a benefit of lockdown because they’d not done online lessons before that.
      All my best,
      Charlotte

  15. What fun Charlotte! And thanks for much for sharing your wonderful singing with Think of Me, one of my favorites.
Such an experience! Tuck it away in your memory book! Congratulations!

    1. Thank you Noelle, Think of Me is one of my Dads favourites. It was a brilliant experience I’ve been dying to tell you all what fun I had doing it in lockdown. My blog is my memory book I must make sure it’s all backed up!

    1. So glad you got to see it, such fun, when Fleur said in round 1 ‘no she’s definitely not a singer’ I thought ‘oh no I’m going to get kicked out in the first round’.

  16. What a blast! Now you have a brand new type of audience that know your name and see how talented you are. I love the two clips you posted, but I would really like to hear your duet of Bang Bang. Doing great, Charlotte!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it Don. I prepared for the ‘Bang Bang’ duet watching Ariana Grande who is an American soprano that did the song with Jessie J. I’d learnt the riffs and everything with George’s help to transpose it in a matching range but to be honest I’m glad I got to do Think of Me instead. Although after standing on that podium for hours and not warming up before singing was a challenge. In the rehearsal slot the singing coaches kept saying go up a notch, go up a notch they were loving it more operatic.

      1. I’m glad you got to see the show Karen, one of my favourite bits is when Anton, who by first impression thought I was definitely a fake, after I lip-sinked to Wuthering Heights said “I don’t know bro!”. When I saw the princess on her podium I thought ohhhh I want to be a princess lol but they did crystal up my black belt 🥋.

  17. Charlotte, you sound better than ever! This is so lovely. I only wish I could see the show over here. I especially appreciate how fierce you look in the karate outfit! As the father of a girl, I really appreciate fierce girls and young women. You go girl!

    1. Thank you Peter 👍🏻 I was only thinking about you the other day and wondering if things were opening back up for you yet?

One of the things I like about karate is that female practitioners are not underestimated, though we competed separately that was more for safety purposes but in the dojos boys would fight girls and my two female Sensei’s could certainly do a lot of damage, I had a hand strike manoeuvre with the inside edge of my hand that was very accurate and effective but the SKU union had to ban it because it was hard to defend against for the under 16’s, people that tried to copy me didn’t have the precision and control to stop centimetres away from a hit – probably helped by my dance training.

  18. Ooooh, your version of Wuthering Heights gave me the chills, in a good way of course, you really nailed that spooky vibe that the song has! And I found the show on YouTube, great fun!

    1. Thanks Elisabeth, my phone lit up last night as friends called to tell me I was on gogglebox, the gogglebox audience reaction was so funny, they were nearly all convinced I was not a real singer (job done ✅) 😁. There was just Marcus who said from the out, “that girl can sing“, I loved his reaction when he was proved right. My other favourite comment was ‘so you can opera’ I love the brother and sister from Blackpool, she has the same gold chair as my Mum, and I went to school with the Malone’s son Tom Jr and danced with him in my A level dance but they didn’t recognise me – their comments were so funny.

  19. Wow, Charlotte, Congratulations! I’m in the US, but watched the episode on You Tube.

What a fun show and fantastic performance! Woohoo! I got goosebumps, absolutely amazing voice and talent! I love both of the songs, but Think of Me is just beautiful.

Thank you for sharing with us, and again, Congratulations!

      1. Hi Charlotte, I managed to watch the show with my mum, she had already seen it but didn’t know I followed your blog. You were great! We have similar tastes in music, I love Kylie and Katherine too 🙂 xx

      2. Thanks Christine, so glad you enjoyed it. When I was little I used to sing Kylie songs and Brittany and Christina, then when I met a classical singer teacher at Knutsford High School I started listening to Kathryn Jenkins and Sarah Brightman and decided that was the sort of singing I wanted to do if I didn’t become a ballet dancer. I saw Kathryn live with my hero the ballet dancer Darcey Bussell in Viva la Diva and thought I wonder if I could do both! Lol – not enough hours in the day. When I started opera training I listened to Diana Damrau, Kathryn Lewek and Natalie Dessay and a host of others that are just fabulous. Take a listen to their Queen of the Night aria.

  21. Congratulation on participating in “I Can See Your Voice”! Being in the U.S., I unfortunately cannot view it, but thoroughly enjoyed your YouTube videos of two of the songs you recorded for your Dad’s birthday. I remember reading Wuthering Heights back in school, long, long ago.

    1. Thank you Lavinia I had a blast. There is a program in the UK called Gogglebox and it is a show about people in different families from all around the UK watching tv shows and commenting on them. My phone lit up on Friday night with friends telling me I was on the show. Most of the families thought I was the bad singer except a guy called Marcus, he was so chuffed he was right, great fun to watch people’s reactions, “she looks possessed!”
I never read the book but when I learnt the song I read all the York notes about the book to get a better understanding of Kathy and Heathcliffe and that part of the book. I’ve put it on my audio book list.

  22. Oh Charlotte, I finally got to see this show. What a star you are! My heart was beating so hard before the final reveal as I knew your voice would blow them away. So proud of you and your whole performance and the versatility which enabled you to compete in the show.

    1. I’m so pleased you got to see the show, I had a blast. My phone lit up on Friday with my family letting me know that I was on Gogglebox on Channel 4, it was funny watching the audience reaction only one of the goggleboxers, Marcus, thought I was a real singer, I loved his little celebration at the end. There were lots of funny moments that didn’t make the cut and I was so tempted to laugh at Jimmy Carr but I’d been asked not to give the game away.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed reading about my exciting adventure. I saw the audition and thought why not go for it. It was awful keeping the secret until after the episode aired, I wanted to tip everyone off to watch it but thought never mind it will be on catchup tv. I’ve had loads of lovely comments on twitter and facebook and here of course. I’m back down to earth now 😂.
All my best wishes to you Resa,
      Charlotte xoxo

Although, get used to flying to the stars and back! 🌟. Your future looks like a comet! ☄️

    1. Aww sorry you can’t see the show, it was great fun. Hope you’re doing well, it’s lovely to see all the gorgeous pets you take to their homes.
      Best wishes
      Charlotte
