Grab your Eye of Newt and Toe of Frog and join me this Halloween as I participate in Gothic Opera’s supernatural double bill at the Round Chapel, 1D Glenarm Road, London, E5 0LY.
Each evening we will present two short operas, including Le Loup-garou (The Werewolf) and Le Dernier Sorcier (The Last Sorcerer). The operas were written by female composers in the 19th Century. Louise Bertin wrote Le Loup-garou and Pauline Viardot composed Le dernier sorcier. Neither have been performed in the UK before, so it is exciting to take part in their UK premiere.
Both Operas share themes of the supernatural and sinister fairy tales. I invite you to grab your broomstick and enjoy a musical evening, where together we can celebrate these two neglected operas whilst sharing a spooky new experience this Halloween.

Wonderful lead photo. I like how the color of your sneakers and hummingbirds on you blouse fit in with the colors of the headstone. Both operas sound like a lot of fun, and it’s very special for you to be part of the first performance in the UK.

😛 my eldest brother and I have always enjoyed halloween, our neighbours were always very generous one would bake cakes for our goody bags. I think a halloween opera production is a great idea.

Amazing, how on earth do you remember all the words and in a different language too.
Two weeks ago I might have agreed with you, how on earth am I going to remember all these hehe. Its just practice, writing out the words and translations, listening to my recordings of me saying the words. Rehearsals started today.

Sounds like two great operas for the season! A whole lot of fun. Just a shame how awful female composers were treated through history, and still today.
I think women like Kaija Saariaho have made major breakthroughs and Unsuk Chin, I was at the RCM with an upcoming composer called Lara Poe. If the female composers are good they will break through now at least I hope that female musicians are starting to be considered equal 😊.

There weren’t Brian, but there are more now I studied one called Kaija Saariaho a Finnish composer who is based in Paris for my Women in Music module. I think as more women have taken on external work in most occupations the numbers have increased.

It’s both a slow and incredibly fast process. Let us remember Oxford did not grant degrees to women until 1920. A century. Some are trying to put stumbling blocks along the road still, but it’s been a century of remarkable progress.

Sew… (being funny) I’m working away on the bodice. It’s slow going. It’s always slow at the beginning, but this time I’m working with sequins (slows things down) and I’m making it to fit you.
I need to get lining for the bodice. Hopefully that will happen this weekend.
AND I now have 2 skirt options. I won’t make a final decision until the bodice is complete.
On I go! The further I get into the gown, the faster the process goes.
