Roaming in Rome

Today, I want to share with you my recent trip to Rome with my husband, George. It was a short but sweet holiday, and we had an amazing time exploring this beautiful city.

From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the stunning architecture, the bustling streets, and the vibrant energy of Rome. We spent our days wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets, enjoying gelato in the sunshine, and taking in the sights and sounds of this historic city.

The Forum

If you’re anything like George and myself and have decided to take a spur-of-the-moment trip to Rome, you might discover that tickets to popular sites like the Colosseum or the Forum can be unavailable or quite costly when purchased at the last minute. Don’t worry, though, as Rome has plenty of hidden gems that are worth exploring spontaneously. A great example is the Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano. This 12th-century Catholic church is famous for its well-preserved medieval and early Christian frescoes and mosaics. It is built on top of two older structures, a 4th-century basilica and a 2nd-century pagan temple, making it an interesting archaeological site to visit. Descending further into the building to uncover ancient religious dwellings, I couldn’t help but feel like I was exploring the Mary Poppins bag of architecture – full of endless surprises.

The Spanish Steps

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Villa Medici. I was particularly excited to visit this cultural landmark because George and I enjoyed watching the TV series “Medici” on Netflix, a dramatisation of the powerful Italian family and their impact on art and politics. I enjoyed being surrounded by the family’s art collection and learning that the Villa continues to support artists through its residency programmes. George and I were thrilled to discover that composers Berlioz, Bizet, Ravel, and Ravel had all been assisted by scholarships from this program. As we stood on the rooftop garden, we were in awe of the city’s incredible skyline. It was enchanting to take in the architecture of this enchanting city. We also enjoyed visiting the Vatican City and admiring the art and architecture of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Of course, no trip to Rome would be complete without indulging in the delicious food. We enjoyed pizza, pasta, and tiramisu at cosy little restaurants tucked away in alleys and squares. I would recommend visiting “La Carbonara”. An outstanding osteria that offers delectable food at reasonable prices. It is located at Via Panisperna, 214, 00184 Roma RM, Italy. And as you may have already guessed, their carbonara is fantastic!

Sunset In Rome

Overall, our trip to Rome was a wonderful experience that we will never forget. We can’t wait to go back and explore more of Italy in the future. Thanks for reading, and happy travels!

  1. Nice trip. Love Roma. Worked there for a time. (I was with Amex). My office was at the bottom of the Spanish steps, then turn left. Lved at the Grand Hotel de La Ville at the top of the steps on the right.
Somebody had to do it! Regards from Florida.

    1. Lucky you, what a great job. How was living in a hotel? Did they provide your meals too, that sounds heavenly.

    1. It’s just a two and a half hour flight for us and George booked it last minute. We were going to go to Venice on our original honeymoon but cancelled through covid but the prices for Rome were much better this time and getting through the airport was very fast. I hope you do get to do a European trip one time all of the capital Cities are so beautiful.

    1. We both felt like we could have stayed a few days longer but had work commitments to get back to. My parents are worried we don’t take any time to play and hadn’t rebooked our honeymoon abroad until now so two boxes ticked 😀.

  2. What a pretty dress to be roaming around Rome in. I love George’s wild shirt, also. Rome is a wonderful city. It sounds like you had a great time on your short, sweet holiday.

    1. Thank you, when I was touring near my parents they have a designer outlet village nearby and it suits our taste for the unusual hehe.

  3. I am so pleased you have been able to get away for a short holiday, and to Rome too! One day maybe I’ll be able to retrace your steps. Thank you for the recommendations and the gorgeous pictures!

    1. I hope you do manage it Clare it is quite a good price at this time of year and the flight is only 2 and a half hours. We got to practice our Italian, I must put in more practice now I’m back 🙃.

  4. Thank you for a nice trip. Down Memory Lane… It’s been a while since we went to Rome. We have gone to Italy a number of times. Definitely one of my top five countries…

    1. Absolutely agree. George’s Mum used to work in Italy so he would visit as a child and speaks a little Italian although we are both rusty.

      1. Georges (I keep putting an S. 😉) is Romanian right? They’re close to Italy and I understand a few speak Italian.
(You could always sing it. 😉)

      1. Have a great new week, Charlotte and George! I watched the Coronation on BBC America the other day, it was so wonderful! 🇬🇧❤️🇬🇧

      2. London is quite magnificent at the moment and the day was fabulous even though sadly typically British! Weather wise. At least they had great weather for the big concert to celebrate yesterday.

    1. I did one of the cruises with my parents and really wished we’d had more time so all the places we went to on that ship are on my bucket list to take more time to explore. I can recommend it.

  5. Oh, gosh, you and George were there just before the Masters 1000 tennis tournament on the clay courts in Rome – starts this week!
Just kidding. I know that wouldn’t make your Top 1000 of things to see and do in Rome, right?
Glad you had a great time!!

    1. I do like Tennis but I prefer to play than watch 😀. My Nana loves Wimbledon though.

  6. What fun on this pop-up trip! I’m so glad you had a good time and got to see some of the many sites. You’d have to spend a month or more there to see everything. And the food – magnifico!

    1. If we’d had time instead of just booking last minute we’d have definitely booked in more planned tickets although it would probably have cost a lot more 😂.

  7. Such a beautiful city. I loved my visits there always so much to see. You both look wonderfully relaxed and your photos are lovely. 🥰😘

  8. I’d love to visit Rome! We actually have a friend there, Andrea Orlando. He is a classic musician who loves dabbling in rock music. He conducts a choir among other things.
Looks like Rome is a gorgeous city, from what you have shown. One day!

ps. re: the gown – have been sewing away. Will answer your mail when I hit the next phase. Love your idea on the green. Right now I’m sewing a miniature sort of black iris beads along the edges of the tail.

    1. It’s a big trip for you but I hope you make it one day, London, Paris, Rome I love them all. Why not mix it up, it is very frowned on to move outside a restricted idea of a classical career but life is too short not to take opportunities as they come don’t you think?

I love a bit of beading it really elevates a gown, I don’t like sewing beads on though so kudos to you 😊.
      Best wishes my friend,

      1. If/when I get to Europe, I might as well see as much as possible.
During the thick of my career, I got sent to the USA a lot, especially New York City and Los Angeles.
        I love those 2 cities.
Now, there are so many mass shootings in the states, I don’t feel comfortable any more.
My N is going to Nashville in July.
Last year I would have worried about him getting covid. Now I just hope he makes it home without getting shot.

OMG! I’m starting to see light at the end of the tunnel with the gown. It’s way down there, but I see it!

  9. What a great destination you chose, and you two look perfect together in what I imagine was a nice break from all your great activities ~ wonderful for you, Charlotte!

    1. Thank you Randall, we had a lovely short break and wished we’d had time for a couple more days but it was a super place to visit.

    1. I do love Italy 🇮🇹 it is one of my favourite places to work and visit. Although we have both been to Rome alone it is our first time there as a couple. I must look Setti Frati up, I was in Trentino for a month studying and performing I absolutely loved it.

  10. Thank you for sharing your trip. You have some nice ideas about where to go besides the most famous icons. We just returned from 8 days in Rome— which is not enough! Next time try the Borghese museum. Amazing place.
    Thank you
