My iTunes Experiment

Over the summer I was lucky enough to record the songs that I had been working on over the past couple of years. I wanted to have something to look back on to remind me of the fabulous time that I have had at the RCS and the wonderful people that I have worked with on improving my vocal technique.

I was excited with the results and shared them with my family. I never really thought about trying to sell them as these recordings were intended to be a personal record of my training but my dad convinced me to burn a few CDs to sell at my recitals and concerts next year as I am often asked if I have any.

But now looking to the future I wonder if it would be possible to try and raise some funds for my future training by trying to sell these tracks on iTunes. I have no idea how they will be received but whatever funds I can generate will help me towards achieving my dreams so I have nothing to lose by giving it a try.

I would love to hear any suggestions that you may have to help me with this project as this is all new to me 🙂

    1. Thanks Clare, I’m just trying to be a bit inventive trying to plan ahead raising funds for my masters, I’m sure next years auditions will come around very quickly!

  4. Downloadable songs are definitely the way to go. You don’t want to get into burning CDs and posting them all over the place. So far I find the prehear never finishes loading, but that may be a temporary problem. I’ll try again tomorrow. Good luck with this!

    1. Cheers Rod, please let me know if you still have problems, not sure I can do anything about it but I’d like to know your experience 😊. I did burn a handful of CDs for my Nana and her friends but it’s expensive with a short run. Thanks for the 🍀.

  6. Charlotte, I wish you the very best but timing is everything. Download sales are in steep decline. Albums are worse. Streaming is everything now. But, unless you have a manager who can negotiate for a reasonable return on your behalf, you likely will earn lunch money. Sorry to be so bleak…

    1. Lunch monies good 😉. My Dad told me keep my hopes grounded and be realistic but every little helps, and I will save every penny towards my training. I believe it’s on Spotify as well, I see this experience as part of my education.

    2. Hi Ray, I’m not an expert in the music industry, but I’d have to respectfully disagree with you for a few reasons. First, she did mention people are asking her for her work, which means the foundation for demand is already there. Second, the demographic that listens to the type of music she sings (I feel) isn’t generally into streaming. They listen to music in more traditional ways. So, there’s no downside to having her songs on iTunes, etc. Finally, and most important to me, are the positive reviews she’ll most likely get on iTunes, Amazon, etc. Eventually, the growing number of positive reviews will move her songs up in the search engines and more people will know about her work in that way who would not have otherwise worldwide. Then, a manager(s) may notice and offer their services to her, which leads to her making increased earnings. If she continues to perform like she does, word-of-mouth is a great advertising tool as well. Besides, she’s very gifted at what she does and works just as hard. It’s only a matter of time, the way I see it. Perseverance.

      1. Have to agree… the genre may well be a critical factor as to the purchase medium. Time will tell, but I believe the ‘traditional’ angle could well be positive in terms of MP3 downloads.

    And she’s off…. yep, our friend and your fellow Spikey, Charlotte, who’s a talented young soprano studying at the ‘The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’ (RCS) in Glasgow, has released an online album.

    If you fancy a bit of culture in your life, or are thinking of treating yourself or a loved one, might be worth checking this out. Charlotte says any money she makes will be put straight back into funding her continuing education, and that somewhat rare attitude needs supporting I reckon these days.

  11. Even though I’ve bought one of your CDs I just wanted you to know that Me and Terry got such a buzz seeing you on Amazon that we downloaded your tracks as well! Anything that we can do to help your training is just wonderful. Terry has put you on ‘random play’ in the car so when we heard your lovely voice come out it was sooooo cool and, I can sing along, Terry says that’s not so cool? Can’t wait to see you. Oh and Eric I totally agree with you. Well said.

  14. I’ve bought your album and, having heard the previews, I’m looking forward to listening to it properly. It seems like a more reliable way of boosting your income than ArtistSignal and a lot less work for your supporters than waking up in the middle of the night to vote! But, having so said, I’m interested, will you be making another bid to win the £10k?

    1. Thanks Terry you’re such a good friend. I hadn’t thought about Artist Signal it was an awful lot to ask from supporters but I met some lovely people on there and it was a buzz so never say never 😊.

    I didn’t get the previews to work but I was able to download the album!

    With classical music I don’t believe that downloading is a problem. I download when I can, though I don’t use iTunes. Some time down the road you might consider selling downloadable FLAC files from your site and using Paypal to handle the money. But that’s for later.
