Soaring Through Song: Discovering Adrian Williams’ “Red Kite Flying”

In the vast expanse of musical exploration, every so often, a piece resonates with you in such a profound manner that it feels as though it was composed with your spirit in mind. This was my exact experience upon encountering “Red Kite Flying,” a mesmerising English song by the extraordinarily talented Adrian Williams. It is my pleasure to share with you the journey of bringing this song to life, a journey that felt akin to the majestic flight of a red kite, gliding gracefully through the boundless sky.

Adrian Williams, a composer known for his ability to capture the essence of nature and the depth of human emotions within his compositions, crafted “Red Kite Flying” as an ode to freedom, resilience, and the beauty of the natural world. The song’s intricate melody and evocative lyrics instantly spoke to me, inviting me on a voyage of musical discovery that I could not resist.

The process of interpreting “Red Kite Flying” was both exhilarating and introspective. It demanded a deep connection to the song’s core themes, requiring me to embody the essence of the red kite’s flight: soaring with strength yet with a sense of serenity and grace. Adrian’s composition masterfully intertwines the piano’s lush harmonies with the vocal line, creating a soundscape that is both expansive and intimate.

Delving into the lyrics, I found myself immersed in a narrative that transcends the simple act of a bird in flight. It’s a metaphor for the human spirit’s ability to rise above challenges and navigate the winds of change with courage and poise. Each phrase of the song felt like a step further into this vividly painted scene, with the red kite’s journey mirroring our own quests for freedom and self-discovery.

From the initial rehearsals to the final recording, every note sung, every emotion conveyed, felt like a tribute to the resilience within us all. It’s a reminder that, much like the red kite, we possess the strength to glide above the trials that life presents, finding beauty and grace in our flight.

I am thrilled to share with you a recording that George and I made of “Red Kite Flying,” a piece that has deeply touched my heart and, I hope, will resonate with yours as well. This song, with its compelling melody and poignant message, serves as a testament to the power of music to inspire, to heal, and to uplift.

Red Kite Flying – Adrian Williams

As we journey through the ever-expanding world of music, let us remember the lessons taught by the red kite’s flight. May we embrace our journeys with strength, grace, and an unwavering spirit of freedom. “Red Kite Flying” is more than just a song; it’s a call to soar, to explore the limitless skies of our potential, and to discover the beauty that lies within and all around us.

  1. I love the song, Charlotte, you two are so great together! Your voice is so amazing! Wishing you both a wonderful new week, be well! ☺️

    1. Thank you very much John, it’s very good to have such a fantastic pianist to practice and perform with, the piano we bought with our wedding gifts records backing tracks so that I can practice too.

      1. Hi Charlotte, the shows start around then yes, although my first one isn’t until late April as the others are too far away really. I will have to get the car out and de-winterise it before then. Oh, and fill it up with fuel as well which is a bit like open wallet surgery these days! But, it’s all about the smiles per gallon not the miles. 😃 I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel again.

    1. Thank you my vocal professor at the Royal College of Music Simon Lepper recommended it to me.

  2. What a beautiful recording of an uplifting song, Charlotte and George! Your voice not only soars with the kites, but with the angels.

An entirely different kind of music, but also conveys flight and soaring is John Denver’s 1974 recording of his song “The Eagle and the Hawk”. It is a hauntingly beautiful song. We have many birds of prey here that soar high and play on the thermals.

    1. Thank you for recommending John Denver to me Lavinia I have a very wide taste in music, it would be interesting to see if George could transcribe it for my vocal range as I like to do concerts on a theme.

      1. John Denver had quite the voice, and songwriting talent. He left this world all too soon, but left an incredible legacy. I was thinking you and George would like that song. Along the same vein is John’s song “Windsong”.

  3. I always love songs with only acoustic piano and vocals; pop, rock, classical music… it doesn’t matter to me. Great performance of you and George, Charlotte. I enjoyed the recording and you both look so happy in the photograph!

    1. I’ve been learning Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill recently I love experimenting with music genres. I was asked to learn Mac the Knife to sing at a party, I thought how on earth am I going to make that sound good in my range, but the birthday man loved it, so job done.

      1. I would love to hear your version of those two songs… When I’m stuck in a project I like to do some covers to get inspired again. I once did Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds but I’m still afraid to play it for someone… 😉

  4. An exciting song with a fantastic accompaniment. Your voice suits this so well, and you soared each time you reached the heights of “flying.” Thanks for sharing this.

    1. I’m going to be working on it as this was an early recording just after I’d learnt it. I like the challenge of the speed of the piece. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

    1. What a fantastic image you conjured up Annette. When my professor at college first suggested it to me I thought oh my! Thats high and fast but I like a challenge.
      Best wishes always,
      Charlotte

  5. Great song! Bravo to you, George and, of course, the composer, Adrian Williams. Love the contrast between the softer moments and those bits that are very intense.

  6. Wow, Charlotte.
This is a most unique song.
Your voice is perfect for it, but perhaps your passion is more perfect.
    George’s piano is intense.
