Discovering the Soulful Aria: “Neghittosi Or Voi Che Fate?”

Having just returned from a lovely relaxing family holiday I wanted to share with you one of my favourite Handel arias, “Neghittosi Or Voi Che Fate?” from his enchanting opera “Ariodante”. This poignant piece is a true gem in the baroque repertoire, offering a rich tapestry of emotion and technical brilliance that never fails to captivate me.

A Glimpse into Handel’s Masterpiece

George Frideric Handel, the masterful composer behind “Ariodante,” premiered this opera in 1735 at Covent Garden, London. The opera itself is a stunning blend of musical artistry and dramatic storytelling set against the backdrop of medieval Scotland. Handel’s composition brilliantly encapsulates the emotional depth and complexity of its characters, making it a timeless treasure in the world of classical music.

The Story Unfolds

“Neghittosi Or Voi Che Fate?” is sung by the character Dalinda in act three of “Ariodante.” At this point in the opera, Dalinda is grappling with the consequences of her misguided actions. She has unwittingly been part of a plot orchestrated by the deceitful Polinesso, who aims to ruin the virtuous Ginevra and her betrothal to Ariodante. In this aria, Dalinda expresses her remorse and despair, realizing the gravity of her involvement in Polinesso’s treachery. It’s a moment filled with regret and emotional turmoil, and Handel’s music beautifully conveys this inner conflict.

A Personal Connection

As a performer, interpreting this aria is both a challenge and a delight. The vocal demands of Handel’s music require precision and control, while the emotional undercurrents call for deep expressiveness. It’s a thrilling experience to embody such a complex character and convey her remorse and sorrow through Handel’s exquisite musical lines.

Sharing My Rendition

I am thrilled to share with you a special recording session where I had the pleasure of performing “Neghittosi Or Voi Che Fate?” The recording captures the raw emotion and intricate nuances of this powerful aria, and I hope it resonates with you as much as it does with me.

Thank you for joining me on this musical journey through Handel’s “Ariodante”. I look forward to sharing more of my favourite pieces and the stories behind them with you soon. Your continued support and enthusiasm mean the world to me.

    1. Hi Don,

Thank you for sharing your blog post with me. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your encounters with different productions of Handel’s operas. Your insights into the various interpretations were fascinating. Regarding the “Ariodante” production, I’m intrigued by the choice to have the characters stand still. Did it give the impression of a concert rendition? Also, do you recall if any characters exhibited more dynamic or nimble movements to contrast with the stillness and highlight different aspects of their personalities?

You sound better than ever. How wonderful!
The bit of history and story is a learning experience for me. Thank you!
Can you believe summer is half over?

At least you had a relaxing holiday with your family, while it’s still here.
You look sublime in the shot at the piano: vibrant, happy and that dress is delightful.

It’s hard to believe how quickly summer is passing. I did have a wonderfully relaxing holiday, and I appreciate your lovely words about the photo and dress. I must admit when I’m in a hot climate, I like to wear long dresses as it means less suncream needs to be applied 🤣.

      1. Good point about the sunscreen.

I wear long baggy shirts in the summer and a hat that casts a shadow on my face.
There is something in sunscreen that I react poorly to. My skin burns and I get a rash.

Enjoy your August and may your wonderful voice reach the stars! 🌟❦

      2. That’s part of the problem I have, I can only wear certain brands of sunscreen without perfume in or I get prickly heat rash.

      3. I think I’m sensitive to the main ingredients.

        Check it out!
” The active ingredients in chemical sunscreens include avobenzone, octinoxate and oxybenzone.

Physical sunblock sits on top of the skin and reflects the sun’s rays. The minerals titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the main active ingredients in physical blocks.”

        No wonder!
        xx

    2. I was singing on the ship every day practicing, the staff were trying to persuade me to learn an Indonesian song maybe for next time.

      1. Well, you can’t blame them. Of course they would want you to use your amazing voice for one of their songs.
It would be a real treat for them.
