Discovering the Soulful Aria: “Neghittosi Or Voi Che Fate?”

Having just returned from a lovely relaxing family holiday I wanted to share with you one of my favourite Handel arias, “Neghittosi Or Voi Che Fate?” from his enchanting opera “Ariodante”. This poignant piece is a true gem in the baroque repertoire, offering a rich tapestry of emotion and technical brilliance that never fails to captivate me.

A Glimpse into Handel’s Masterpiece

George Frideric Handel, the masterful composer behind “Ariodante,” premiered this opera in 1735 at Covent Garden, London. The opera itself is a stunning blend of musical artistry and dramatic storytelling set against the backdrop of medieval Scotland. Handel’s composition brilliantly encapsulates the emotional depth and complexity of its characters, making it a timeless treasure in the world of classical music.

The Story Unfolds

“Neghittosi Or Voi Che Fate?” is sung by the character Dalinda in act three of “Ariodante.” At this point in the opera, Dalinda is grappling with the consequences of her misguided actions. She has unwittingly been part of a plot orchestrated by the deceitful Polinesso, who aims to ruin the virtuous Ginevra and her betrothal to Ariodante. In this aria, Dalinda expresses her remorse and despair, realizing the gravity of her involvement in Polinesso’s treachery. It’s a moment filled with regret and emotional turmoil, and Handel’s music beautifully conveys this inner conflict.

A Personal Connection

As a performer, interpreting this aria is both a challenge and a delight. The vocal demands of Handel’s music require precision and control, while the emotional undercurrents call for deep expressiveness. It’s a thrilling experience to embody such a complex character and convey her remorse and sorrow through Handel’s exquisite musical lines.
