Green Finch and Linnet Bird – this is from a concert that I performed in alongside the Tideswell Male Voice choir on the 27th July 2013 in St John’s Church, Tideswell.

This song is from the Sondheim Musical ‘Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ where my character, Johanna, is the ward of Judge Turpin, the man who falsely convicted her father – Sweeney Todd – in order to have his way with her mother Lucy once Johanna’s father had been exiled to Australia.  Her mother is driven insane and the judge raises Johanna as his own.  He keeps her like a prisoner, with only a window to view the outside world.  The judge plans to make Johanna his wife once she is of age but she rejects him.  Green Finch and Linnet Bird is a beautiful song and I hope that I reflect the fact that Johanna has been suffering and is kept under lock and key and longs for her freedom.

O Mio Babbino Caro  ( Oh My Beloved Father ) – this is another video from the above concert where I was accompanied on piano by the fabulous Christopher Ellis GRAM.

This song is a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918), by Giacomo Puccini, to a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano.  My character is Lauretta after tensions between her father Schicchi and the family of Rinuccio, the boy she loves, have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from him. I love to sing this song as it really allows me to express the emotion of the character at a key point in the opera.

Danny Boy – this performance is taken from my concert on the 5th August 2013 at St Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Edinburgh.  I was accompanied on the day by Marcus Kitchen who also attends the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Danny Boy is a ballad written by English songwriter Frederic Weatherly in 1910.  It was set to the tune of ‘Londonderry Air’ in 1913.

The musical genre is ‘Folk Song’.  There are a few variations to the lyrics and various theories to the meaning. Whatever it means to you personally I hope that you enjoy my performance.

Art is Calling For Me (I want to be a Prima Donna) is from the Broadway Comic Opera ‘The Enchantress’ (Victor Herbert / Harry B Smith).  First performed in 1911 in the New York Theatre, New York.  The style of the piece is ‘Romantic’.

I absolutely love this piece of music, I feel it was written for me :)    even though I can only dream of being a Princess.

I would like to thank everyone for their help in selecting which of my two versions of “Art Is Calling For Me”.  The first performance received 3844 votes and the second received 1828 votes.  I will leave both recordings in my original post  ( Link ) .

Per la Gloria d’adorarvi   is an aria from the opera Griselda by Giovanni Bononcini and is probably one of the best known from the opera.  I hope that you enjoy the performance :)

Freundliche Vision

I chose to sing two Lieder composed by Richard Strauss (1864 – 1949 ) “Zueignung” and “Freundliche Vision” for my entry into the Kathleen Ferrier Bursary competition in November 2013. Here is a video of my performance of “Freundliche Vision” (A Pleasant Vision) from the final round.

The strong lyrical melodies and the rich harmonies within this song made it a joy to perform.  To perform Lieder well you need to have a seamless relationship between piano and voice, the piano does far more than accompaniment, it forms an equal partnership with the voice and the skill of the pianist is very important to how the song is portrayed.  The accompanist in this performance was a talented RCS student from Romania, George Todica, and I hope you enjoy our version.

Antonin Dvorak – Rusalka

The Royal Opera House’s article says “Rusalka is an opera about singing.  Or rather, what happens when you cannot sing”.  It echoes the story of The Little Mermaid.  I loved Disney’s ‘Ariel (The Little Mermaid)’ as a child.  I enjoy singing the aria ‘Song to the Moon’ even more.  This aria comes at the start of the story as Rusalka, a water nymph, sings to the moon.  It is a plea to the moon to reveal her love to the Prince.  Rusalka gives up her voice to be united with the Prince, but he is put off because she cannot say a word and he accepts the hand of a Foreign Princess.  The witch Jezibaba’s curse is for Rusalka to live in the depths of the lake forever.

I sing this aria in Czech which makes it even more beautiful as I have to demonstrate the intense feeling to my English speaking audiences.   Classical Music says “Rusalka is the most popular Czech opera in circulation.

Christopher Bruce – Set Dance 2012 –  I have found a recording of me dancing my set piece for my A level dance pre-exam performance evening, it’s not a great copy but I have posted it for anyone who wishes to have look 🙂  I had broken my right foot 12 weeks before this evening and had only been able to learn the dance choreography and get my strength back for four weeks, so I had my Dad record it so that I could see where I needed to concentrate my efforts on improving before my exam.  But it will give you an idea of the contemporary dance that I studied at school and college.

  1. Thank you for liking my post ‘Musical Sunset’ and following my Blog. I love your voice. Very nice. Classical music has gotten me through my teenage years, and it is still a huge pick-me-up today. With two musical boys (a singer and a pianist) there is always music around, and especially the young one has taken to classical music. Fingers crossed he’ll end up on the big stage one day, too. I will enjoy following your journey and wish you all the best for it 🙂

    1. What lovely comments, thank you, I wish both of your boys good luck in their musical studies, my brothers both sang and danced and although my eldest brother did a Maths degree he always found the time for his dancing, reaching the position of President of the University Dancesport team and being awarded half colours.

They both gave up on the singing at sixteen sadly, couldn’t stand the competition with their sister, hey boys lol 🙂

      1. Wow! ~ What Beauty you create Charlotte…Thank you so much for following your Muse and sharing it with us. You are a true Artist, your Art is very engaging and emotive. I love Churches for performances, there is just something special about them, they seem to elevate the performance. Last year I did my Art show in an intimate little Theatre; which is also great, but this year I am doing my Art,Poetry and Music performance in a Church. I will be recording it and will share it as well in November. Keep up the great Art+Work, and keep in touch…{and thanks for liking my City light’s radio special, I appreciate that Charlotte} always~Quinten

      2. Thank you very much Quinten, you have a great unique name. I do love all art, even Karate Kata routines are like art when done well. Churches do elevate the performance and sometimes I get tingles in my spine if I hit a song just right. Let me know when you put your Church performance on your blog in November in case I miss it, I’ll be even busier when I get back to the Conservatoire.

  2. I got goosebumps listening to ‘O Mio Babbino Caro’. You have an incredible voice. Thank you for following my blog, I feel honoured.

    1. Hi Nicola, thank you for your lovely words, I love fashion, makeup and food too, like your blog – but not so much running, sprint races maybe but not the long distance stuff – ohhh noo. I’d rather swim a mile or two.

  3. Thanks for following my blog Charlotte. I would have never been able to listen to your amazing voice. It’s as if the heavens have handed down a meadow lark to playfully swoop down and carve it’s wings into a field of new fallen snow. Incredible, and hats off.

    1. What lovely words Deon, thank you so much, do you have a computer program reader? I’d love to get an understanding of how you picture images in my songs, do you hear a difference in the audio records from the video recordings, what do they conjure up when you listen, colours, movement? My Grandpa lost the sight in one eye many years ago to a tumour and I really admire you blogging and writing and learning to touch type, my Mum forced me to learn from a computer training disk. I’m glad I found your blog.

      1. Morning Miss Hoather.

I had vision in my right eye until the summer of 2010 when I los that eye’s vision due to complications from a bout I waged with infancy retinal cancer back in 1961. When music, and song take me away today, I am able to soar along the memories of my past, and your song, my dear, truly takes me away. I thank you for that.

I use a screen reader called JAWS to access my computer. The following link will take you to a blog post from last winter in which I wrote about the transition from a sighted bpc user, to a blind billy goat’s perspectives of a whole new dimension into the digital world

I have so many to thank for so much, and will be grateful for what I have learned and where I am in this new chapter of my life. I am blessed, as are you my dear for having the gift of song under your wings.

Thanks for the note, and God bless,

      2. Thanks for taking the time to send me such a lovely reply. Good luck with your book. Your last quote from an unknown author is very true, I find that sometimes people that appear to have the most are not always the happiest. I intend to make the most of everything that is offered to me.

  4. Charlotte,

Thank you for the follow. I took the time to listen to some of your performances and am quite impressed.

You remind me of a young Audra McDonald. And I would know, having gone to school with her in magnet and performing arts schools from 8th through 12 grade in Fresno, CA (She’s a year behind me.)

I am not a singer, and can’t explain the technical side, but the “It” factor is there to my listening.

I am sure we will be seeing more of you, and not just what you have blogged yourself.

    1. Hi Andy, thanks for your feedback and your comparison to Audra McDonald is very welcome although I do have some way to go yet 🙂

I hope that you can drop by and visit with me again soon

  5. Thanks for following my blog Charlotte, for it gave me the opportunity to visit your blog (which I may not have otherwise found) …. and listen to your wonderful voice. Later I had to collect my family around for them to listen, as all of them are also learning/interested in music and they enjoyed it. Wish you all the very best life can give.
    Regards
    Ravi

    1. Hi Ravi, thanks for visiting with me and I am so glad that you all enjoyed my performances, that means a lot to me.

I enjoyed reading through your posts on jam making and your gooseberry ice-cream. I do so enjoy eating fruit and I must try gooseberries and see what they taste like 🙂

  6. Thanks Charlotte for following Common Looking @ commonlooking.com. I subscribed to you as well. Another great site I have is The WiseGuy Diaries @ thewiseguydiaries.com. I truly think you will love it, as almost half a million other bloggers and readers in 158 countries have today. Go to the story, ‘Next time you think, I don’t like cops’ and see why. Post a comment or ping and get your site out with mine. By the way, you are blessed with a phenomenal voice and ‘Danny Boy’ struck a nerve in me as my son is named Dan. Thanks again

  7. Charlotte,

Thanks for the follow. You have a beautiful voice. Good luck in your career pursuit. My commendation to you for a singer to listen to for brilliant nuance in voice and emotion is Eva Cassidy, if you haven’t heard of her yet. I suggest her because she sang a definitive version of “Danny Boy” and also sang a song titled “Waly, Waly,” although it’s actually another name for the song, “When Cockleshells Turn Silver Bells.” Thought you might be interested.

Here are a few links to her music: http://evacassidy.org/eva/

    Chris

    1. Hi Chris, this reminds me of journeys to school with my brothers in Gill’s car. Gill owned all of Eva Cassidy’s CDs and played them constantly. I know all of the songs that you have mentioned and found myself replaying them in my head. I once played Dorothy in an amateur production of the Wizard of Oz and I was very tempted to use Eva’s arrangement in the show 🙂

  8. Dear Charlotte,
Thank you for visiting, liking and following my blog. I just have two words for your blog and your singing. OH YEAH!!! 🙂

    1. Hi Russ, thanks for the support 🙂 I love to read through the posts that I find on blogs it is a great way to appreciate other people’s perspectives. What type of music, dance and song have been passed down through your heritage ? Did each tribe have their own musical and creative identities ? If so where they ever shared when tribes met ?

  9. Charlotte – I really enjoyed listening to your performances and I am looking forward to your progress reports. I hoe you reach all your dreams.
Thank you for following my blog. I hope you enjoy the stories of my family during World War II.

    1. Thank you for visiting me and I am glad that you enjoyed my performances. I follow several blogs that have detailed the lives of ordinary people during the war years and find the letters and descriptions fascinating. I am so glad that you got the chance to leave your “discoveries” for other people to stumble across and experience.

      1. Hi Megan, I was wondering what inspires you to write your poetry? I love poetry and song lyrics, after all without them my job would be a lot harder 🙂

        Charlotte

      2. Well I really love music, and I grew up in it, so I like putting whatever I’m thinking about to song. I also really enjoy finding words to say what I am thinking, but keep the thought fitting to the meter. I guess, I think a lot, and my thoughts are usually best put down through poetry. Sometimes a story works better, so I write stories too. Short stories and full length. Day to day thoughts or really important thoughts just seem to belong in poetry, I guess. C=

  10. Thank you for following my blog!

I wish you well on your musical journey. I think it takes serious commitment and courage to pursue a career in music, unparalleled by any profession, and for that, I commend your efforts.

Also, I have a fond appreciation for singing. Since grade school, I have always been a part of choirs, and to this day, I enjoy taking part in them. On rare occasions have I mustered the courage to sing a solo, but I think for future reference, I’ll leave it to the professionals, like yourself!

Again, thank you for the follow, and God bless on your journey.

    1. Hi Jonah, thanks for your lovely words of support 🙂 Singing for me is a great way to share my exuberance and love of life. I am pleased that you sing with a choir as it is a great way to bond with a group of like minded people. I sing in a choir and also perform as a soloist with two male voice choirs and find the whole experience fantastic.

  11. oh, what a magnificent voice you have Charlotte! i especially enjoyed Danny Boy and O Mio Babbino Caro reaching both halves of my Italian / Irish heart. i’m surrounded by music, my wife is a trained singer and my daughter sings and plays piano as well.

i love church performances, the acoustics seem to elevate the voice as no ther venue can. my wife is also a violin / viola teacher here in Chicagoland, quite well known and she’s taken her students to France and Italy, on a church performance series throughout those countries.

i want to thank you for following my poetry, i feel honored that such a wonderful artist like you would take the time to read my poems, ty.

    1. Thank you so much 🙂 I am so pleased that you enjoyed these songs. It sounds like you have as hectic a time in your family as I have with mine. Do you write to relax or for enjoyment ? it is great that we can share the results on your blog though so please keep it up.

As a student please pass on my thanks to your wife for the encouragement that she provides for her pupils as these performance opportunities for students really give you a boost.

      1. sorry for he late reply Charlotte, we just go back from a weekend trip to our farm. i will most certainly pass on your thanks to her and i want to show her the videos of your performances too. and you are so right, her students all seem to cross another threshold after these tours, the experiences are so beneficial and encouraging to them.

as for my writing, i need to create. i’m a former painter / illustrator who has been creatively dormant, so this newly discovered writing passion, especially poetry has allowed me to feel ‘complete’ again. thank you again for taking time out of your hectic schedule, and yes ours is very hectic too, but honestly we wouldn’t have it any other way!

  12. Wow. Your O Mio Babbino Caro captivated me. I could listen to you sing all day and I keep mentally inserting your voice into my favorite operas. Thanks for creating a site that allows fans–new and old–to follow you on this incredible journey! Next time I’m across the pond, I’ll have to seek out a concert.

    1. Hi Katie your comment gave me a real lift when I read it, thank you 🙂

I am so grateful for the support that you and others have shown me through their lovely comments. It is such a boost when you are learning a new piece of music or tackling new lyrics in a new language.

I do hope that you can find the time to drop by and visit again soon.

  13. Hi there, Charlotte. Thank you for following my blog!

You have such a magnificent voice. Beautiful. I always used to dream about being a classical singer when I was younger, and listening to you sing kind of makes me wish I tried to achieve it!

Best wishes for all your endeavours 🙂

    1. Hi Jennifer, thanks for your best wishes, that’s a lovely compliment, its never too late you could maybe join a local choir, its a great way of getting classical music lessons and some great camaraderie.

  14. I think its great! As an artist who is always discovering and trying new things, I wonder if you have considered doing work in more contemporary genres? With the type of control that you have, the possibilities would be incredible. Kate Bush was herself a soprano….thank you for your follow! All the best and I look forward to seeing more of your stuff!

    1. I love your art, we buy glass art as gifts for our Mum, her favourite is Kosta Boda. She will love your work.
Coincidently Kate Bush is one of Mums favourite artists so I know a lot of her material, she is fabulous. At the moment I’m concentrating on technique, breathing, vowels and resonance rather than adding to much new repertoire other than the work I need to work on for the course.
I love all sorts of music though including favourite artists like Dolly Parton.

      1. Best of luck to you! Soak it all up, get that lovely voice into even better shape and you will do great no matter where your desire takes you! Kosta Boda is a great glass maker….but I do admit a fondness for a certain glass upstart in the States with a very British sounding name….

      2. Thanks for the good luck message, half of my family are from the Potteries in Staffordshire :). Sadly most of the pot banks have closed down and the kilns pulled down. I love the glass in your blog header is it a wall hanging?

  15. Beautiful rendition of “O Mio Babbino Caro” (which we love). Paul likes to sing although he’s not in your league – but he does have a sense of how it feels on the inside. Danny Boy reminds us of Cheryl’s Dad who loved it. Sorry we missed you in Firenze – maybe next time? Thanks for the “follow”!

    1. Hi Cheryl & Paul, thanks for your lovely comments 🙂 I love to read about peoples travels on their blogs it gives me some great tips. When I first start out traveling abroad to sing I will need to manage my cash so keep up with the posts it all helps educate us “beginners”.

      1. You may not see your pedigree yet, but you will. I am honored to have been heard. You remind me of Frederica von Stade, who is the most down-to-earth person and yet incredibly talented. She lives in a huge house with lots of children. Or Jake Heggie, who is also kind. Great people are nothing but true.

  16. How exquisite. Your energy and your talent. Wonderful to connect and thanks for following my posts. I look forward to enjoying your work. In Love; Yve

  17. Hello!
You have an absolutely lovely voice!! And I have to say, you did a particularly beautiful job of Green Finch and Linnet Bird–it has always been one of my favorites.
Best of luck to you in your endeavors, I look forward to seeing your posts. (And thanks for peeking in on mine!)

  18. A wonderful rendition of Danny Boy. Thank you for the follow and I am happy to return the favor. My two boys are in high school theater here in the states and it to hear and see them mature in their singing and performance makes this father’s heart very joyful! Blessings on your singing, education, and life!

    1. Hello Roger, Your photographs of Australia are magnificent, I love to explore these other Countries through photography blogs. 1. Hi Mary, I only have the recordings in the side panel from the end of year recording at RCS my conservatoire. The Glasgow based female choir I sing with, Les Sirenes, have a cd out soon with work we recorded before we broke up for the summer break.
Thanks for visiting my blog I hope I can tempt you back again.

  20. Charlotte: What a joy to find you! You have that rare combination of a beautiful performing voice and the excellent sense of what you sing well — plus the personality to pull it off. I LOVED the Sondheim and the Victor Herbert! Don’t know how you found me to reach out to on my own blog, but I’m so glad you did. I look forward to hearing much, much more from you!

    1. Hello Susan, I want to improve my lyric writing and understanding I wrote a blog post about poetry a couple of months ago and I like to read other poets work. You have a lovely blog. Thanks for finding me.

    1. Thank you so much :). I really miss my contemporary dance classes, all my dance classes actually, I used to do between 12 and 15 hours dance each week, it was a big part of my life and a fabulous way to stay fit. I took up Zumba and Yoga and restarted ballet with a different syllabus in Glasgow because its important to maintain a good exercise routine and when you love dance it’s an easy way to stay fit.
