The Little Horses

February 8, 2015 — 81 Comments

This past ‘reading week’ at the Conservatoire I have been putting the final touches to my essay on Wagner and just wanted to relax and chill out for a couple of days so Iย took the opportunity to go home for the weekend.

I arrived back in Glasgow about 8:30 pm so tonight’s post will only be a short one but nevertheless I hope that you enjoy it ๐Ÿ˜Š. Following my post on Aaron Copland and the songs that I performedย for my exam in January I was asked if there was any chance to record them. ย During the week I was able to put some time aside and record the songs and tonight I would like to share the first of those songs with you.

“The Little Horses” is a lullaby and evokes images of the Old American West. When I told my Dad he said it reminded him of a TV programme that he watched growing up, “The Little House On The Prairie” based on the stories written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

You’ve changed your hair. It looks great.
I used to have hair (gazes wistfully into the middle distance and sighs).

Lovely work and you look gorgeous, Charlotte. Congrats.

Beautiful story about the horses, and may the Lord bless you in your career. Always give God the glory for every victory that he gives you in your Walk through the Garden.

I really like this. i think I like your voice on this as much as anything I’ve heard. Very nice indeed.

Great! .. I know the little house on the prairie …:-), but the photo, song and your voice remind me of the little horses Wales, the Gower Peninsula. Thank you Charlotte.

Dear Ms. Hoather, “I am so mad I could blow…..” Actually I have not been that mad, well, in memory. BUT, the sound on my ‘upgrade’ tower is messed up. You know I am a fan and I will hear your offerings. peace, jake

I like this song very much especially the way Copeland changes the tempo. As always you sang it beautifully. Clare x

I love horses, and this is a lovely lullaby, beautifully sung.

This is absolutely one of my favorite lullabies ever! And this was a playful version I hadn’t heard before- very well done! It’s funny that it makes you over there think of pioneer America. It makes me imagine the English countryside! And all the pretty little horses. ๐Ÿ™‚

Very nice picture of you with the background of those wild/young horses. The song is beautiful and energetic.

LOVE this… I felt at one point you actually were channeling this little horses.. Such energy and vitality – Brava!

I love this piece, so evocative and lyrical, especially with the change of pacing – and of course your voice!

I do think this is one of your best photo’s yet. Fine equines too. Was this a location shot or a photoshop?

Either way, the pics are captivating and the melody haunting and particularly lovely.

Lovely performance, Charlotte. This is one of my favorite songs, both the plain lullaby, which I have song to my children, and the Copland setting. Thank you for sharing this!

You have an amazing voice and I love the song you chose.

Super super, Charlotte! A pleasure to listen to your interpretation of this beautiful song! Bravo!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

The music reminds me of the wild mustangs and the roundups.

    Marvelous–as always.

Lovely song and beautifully sang. Fantastic Charlotte x

Thanks for recording the songs for us! I also found it amusing that your father would equate this to Little House on the Prairie! Hopefully your next selection will not remind him of Grizzly Adams!

I have always loved much of the music of Copeland, and have used it in films and instillation. However, I do not use his music based on western themes, as it seems to me that being a person of his times, he was very much at the forefront of erasing us Indigenous people from the landscape that we have inhabited for thousands of years. It is strange to note the power of music for good or ill, and the ease with which erasures take place before our eyes.

Thanks for adding your words to my post Michael. Iโ€™ve been studying Wagner last term and only became aware of controversies surround composers and politics during that exercise. I learn something new every day through my music.

      Best wishes

One of my favorite songs since I was a child…your voice is awesome! Thanks so much!

I loved this song as a child and my daughter loves it when I put her to sleep with it too. Never heard some of these verses before. Lovely!

Can’t listen to it yet because I am at work, but I did love the Little House on the Prairie books when I was a kid! Loved the TV show too. In fact, just the other day Google was celebrating her birthday. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Loved that Charlotte. Well done

    Great! Thank you!

Charlotte, it’s Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birthday today. Thought you would like to know!

I’m going to have to watch some of these old series her story of her pioneer family sounds good. Thanks for telling me I looked it up how fabulous to be remembered 148 years after your birth.

      Best wishes

Ok, thats it, I’m really going to shut my computer and get to bed now, so that I can go to sleep with that charming lullaby, beautifully sung, in my ears.

Love the countryside scenery with the lovely group portrait of the powerful horses, and of course your inserted selfie!I did enjoy your sweet voice and the soft, relaxing music of the lullaby!Have a wonderful and creative day, dear Charlotte ๐Ÿ™‚

Charlotte, better and better. I really enjoyed it. And that picture of you is the best yet.

I have to remember to check out your SoundCloud page again.

Beautiful work and such a great song with your vocals ~ and with meaning for me as the American West is home (and Little House on the Prairie was the most watched weekly series in our home, my sisters loved it…). Wish you well!

Hehe, this is my kind of song. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I used to sing this to my son when he was a wee babe — not nearly as skillfully, though, as you do! Well done, Charlotte. You have a lovely voice!
