This past ‘reading week’ at the Conservatoire I have been putting the final touches to my essay on Wagner and just wanted to relax and chill out for a couple of days so I took the opportunity to go home for the weekend.
I arrived back in Glasgow about 8:30 pm so tonight’s post will only be a short one but nevertheless I hope that you enjoy it 😊. Following my post on Aaron Copland and the songs that I performed for my exam in January I was asked if there was any chance to record them. During the week I was able to put some time aside and record the songs and tonight I would like to share the first of those songs with you.
“The Little Horses” is a lullaby and evokes images of the Old American West. When I told my Dad he said it reminded him of a TV programme that he watched growing up, “The Little House On The Prairie” based on the stories written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
You’ve changed your hair. It looks great.
I used to have hair (gazes wistfully into the middle distance and sighs).
The great thing about long hair is that you can style it differently with a few curlers or plaits and hair grips, just in case you were wondering 🙂

I love horses, and this is a lovely lullaby, beautifully sung.
I never really had much success with horses; I went to a couple of horse riding parties with my friends, who were big riders, and that was fun. Thank you.

This is absolutely one of my favorite lullabies ever! And this was a playful version I hadn’t heard before- very well done! It’s funny that it makes you over there think of pioneer America. It makes me imagine the English countryside! And all the pretty little horses. 🙂
I also love the idea of people picturing their own scene that’s the beauty of music.

I have always loved much of the music of Copeland, and have used it in films and instillation. However, I do not use his music based on western themes, as it seems to me that being a person of his times, he was very much at the forefront of erasing us Indigenous people from the landscape that we have inhabited for thousands of years. It is strange to note the power of music for good or ill, and the ease with which erasures take place before our eyes.
Thanks for adding your words to my post Michael. I’ve been studying Wagner last term and only became aware of controversies surround composers and politics during that exercise. I learn something new every day through my music.

You should check out the song done by Peter, Paul and Mary folk singer in the 1960’s. That’s a beautiful version that I grew up with. Take a listen and tell me what you think.
I listened and I liked the harmonies and their version very much it would be nice to do it was a trio.

Can’t listen to it yet because I am at work, but I did love the Little House on the Prairie books when I was a kid! Loved the TV show too. In fact, just the other day Google was celebrating her birthday. 🙂
